According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, there have been seven confirmed cases of Zika in Illinois, but they have been mostly travel-related and low-risk. Debra Gittler was the first high-risk case of Zika exposure due to her pregnancy and her time spent in El Salvador, a country with one of the most cases of Zika in Latin America.
Her exposure during her pregnancy has put her baby at risk for microcephaly, a condition linked with Zika that causes abnormal brain development in infants, and caused a fight for insurance coverage of her unpaid medical bills.
