WBEZ Investigates Veterans Dying Of Legionnaires’ Disease In State Facility
Since 2015, 13 Illinois war veterans at a state facility in downstate Quincy have died from Legionnaires’ disease, a type of severe pneumonia, after falling ill due to exposure to bacteria-contaminated water. The state has spent millions of taxpayer dollars to address the issue, but cases continue to pop up.
Now, 11 families are suing the state for negligence and Senator Dick Durbin is calling for the veterans home five hours southwest of Chicago to be closed immediately until the problem can be fixed.
Morning Shift talks to WBEZ state politics reporters Tony Arnold and Dave McKinney about their reporting into what’s being done to address the deaths.
