WBEZ/BGA Investigation Exposes History of Broken Elevators In CHA Housing

Imagine this: You step on the elevator in your building to go down 20 floors to the ground level. Halfway through, the elevator stops, stuck. Trying not to panic, you attempt to contact emergency services through the elevator call button… but it’s not working either. What do you do?

That’s the potential dilemma facing residents in buildings managed by the Chicago Housing Authority. A joint investigation by WBEZ and the Better Government Association found a history of unsafe elevators and a lack of sufficient oversight by the CHA has led residents to live in fear of their own buildings.

In this interview, Morning Shift takes a look at the state of elevator safety in Chicago’s CHA buildings.

GUEST: Alejandra Cancino, investigative reporter at the Better Government Association
