Police have made two arrests in connection with the high number of drug overdoses on Chicago’s West Side last week. Police say there were 74 overdoses in 72 hours because of a bad batch of heroin laced with the narcotic fentanyl. The overdoses come on the heels of a new Illinois law that some advocates are calling one of the more comprehensive approaches to treating the heroin epidemic in the country. The law allows addicts enrolled in Medicaid to pay for treatment. It also requires first responders to carry the heroin antidote Narcan. Dr. Dan Lustig, Vice President of Clinical Services at the drug treatment center Haymarket Center, shares what he’s seeing in his work with addicts, and what still needs to be done to combat high number of overdoses like we saw last week.
