We’re having a party this week on Radio M to celebrate the musical legacy of Sir Coxsone Dodd-the Berry Gordy of Jamaica. Dodd was one of the most prolific producers on the island, churning out more than 400 hundred singles by artists ranging from the well known: Bob Marley , Lee Scratch Perry and Marcia Griffiths, to the obscure: Ken Boothe and The Gladiators.

Dodd’s Studio One was often referred to as the Motown of Jamaica and  with good reason. Dodd had an uncanny ear for was was good and he could anticipate what was around the corner musically. Sir Coxsone’s early determination to record Jamaican musicians playing a combination of American R&B mixed with Jamaican elements ushered in the country’s first truly national music: ska.
