Last week, Newton Minow was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, alongside Michael Jordan, Tom Hanks, and Ellen DeGeneres.

Minow is an attorney who served as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the 1960s, and later went into private practice.

He met his wife, Josephine, when they were both students at Northwestern University and they got married in 1949. The couple recently spoke to each other at the Chicago History Museum, about the city they both love.

StoryCorps’ mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to share, record and preserve their stories. These excerpts, edited by WBEZ, present some of our favorites from current visits, as well as from previous trips.
