When StoryCorps producer Bill Healy was a senior at Georgetown University, he read a textbook co-written by Northwestern professor John McKnight. McKnight has worked on progressive issues at the city, state and federal levels for decades. He was director of the ACLU in Illinois, Midwest Director of the United States Civil Rights Commission, co-founder a center for urban affairs at Northwestern University and the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group. Recently Healy tracked down the 84 year old at his home in Evanston and invited him to the StoryCorps booth. McKnight was also a neighborhood organizer in Chicago in the 1950s.
