Sean Callaghan was working construction in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood in December of 1983 when the scaffolding holding him broke. He fell 12 stories down an elevator shaft. He was injured badly, but survived.

At StoryCorps Chicago, he talked to his wife Deborah about how the experience left him feeling profoundly lucky and how it changed his life.
