StoryCorps Chicago: ‘What Is It That People Who’ve Never Been Incarcerated Before Don’t Get?’

Terry Banies met Darryl Cooke when they both were students at Governors State University. They bonded over their past experiences with incarceration and a shared commitment to healing.

In December, the two men sat down at the StoryCorps booth in the Chicago Cultural Center to reflect on the challenges of re-entering society after incarceration.

This piece was produced in partnership with The Justice Project, a StoryCorps initiative to preserve and amplify the stories of people affected by jail incarceration across the U.S. Learn more at storycorps.org.
