Sam Cooke grew up on the South Side of Chicago and first made his mark in the world of Gospel music during the 1950s as the lead singer of the legendary group, The Soul Stirrers. Cooke eventually moved into pop music, becoming a huge crossover success and laying the foundation for 60s soul music along the way.

This documentary, narrated by Richard Steele, traces the way in which the trajectory of Cooke's remarkable career paralleled the rising tides of the Civil Rights Era.
