WBUR, Boston presents a documentary about one of the fundamentals of medicine in the U.S. – primary care. It is a story about how a complex modern healthcare environment and new attitudes towards practicing medicine amongst doctors has had a major effect on the availability of doctors at the center of a patient’s medical journey. The result in the short term is that patients are finding it harder and harder to get in to see a primary care physician. In the longer term, many policy makers and practitioners agree that a lack of primary care across the country means that we are losing out on an important way of improving the nation’s health and reducing the spiraling costs of healthcare.
