Barber Shop Show 181: Building Blocks for Children's Success
On this installment of the Barber Shop Show, we talk about Steve Bogira’s recent report for The Chicago Reader about the impact of PTSD on Children. According to the article, “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was first studied in combat veterans, but in recent years it's become clear that children are especially [at risk].” Steve joined host Richard Steele at the shop and helped us to look at the cost of untreated PTSD… not in The Middle East; but in our own backyard. Plus, we learn about a program training college students to serve preschool children in under-resourced communities.
We were also joined by:
Innovation Zone Project Development Manager
Illinois Action for Children
Melissa Frazin & Lupe Raya of
Jumpstart Chicago at DePaul University
Bryan Stokes II
Director of Programs at
Gads Hill Center
Later, we heard about the need for more trauma centers on the South Side, and the ripple effect on the whole South Suburban region.
For that conversation, we spoke with:
J. Brian Malone, Executive Director of the Kenwood Oakwood Community Organization (KOCO)
Alexis Moore, youth organizer from Fearless Leading by the Youth, (FLY)
and Park Forest, IL Mayor John Ostenburg
