On this week’s show, we talked about the legacy of Billy Strayhorn, a member of Duke Ellington’s band for decades. Strayhorn is also one of the most under-appreciated composers of the 20th Century. The Billy Strayhorn Festival, going on now thru November 21st at the Auditorium Theatre. To talk more about Strayhorn life and legacy, host Richard Steele was joined at the shop by: • Alyce Claerbaut, Billy Strayhorn’s niece, • Jazz critic Howard Mandel, and • Christina Bourné of the Auditorium Theatre Then, we talked about two of the recent victims of Chicago’s crisis of violence: a 9 year old, and a young aspiring model. For that conversation, we were joined by: • The Sun-Times’ Maudlyne Ihejirika Lastly, in honor of Veteran’s Day, we revisited the story of Milton Olive III. Milton was a Chicago native, and the first African-American to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War.
