A Chicago Sunrise: In photos

One of my favorite spots in the Vocalo galaxy of entertainment is the daily feature of someone photographing the sunrise at Navy Pier.

I like it because I have a sneaking suspicion that few Chicagoans--relative to our population size, at least---have routinely watched the sun rise over Lake Michigan.

We're a working-persons town, so the rising sun isn't a spectacle; it's a signal that the day has begun: time go to work.

But gazing at a Lake Michigan sunrise is one of the most sublimely beautiful experiences this city offers.

On the right morning, the sky over the lake is nearly black. Then it cycles through endless shades of orange and red before magically becoming blue.

Think about it: We crowd the lake to 'oooh' and 'ahhh' over man-made fireworks this time of the year. And here, nature provides a far superior show and we hardly notice.

But we should.
