After what looked like a relatively depressing medal placement in the 200m butterfly when he came in second, Michael Phelps made Olympic history by winning his 19th medal, the most of any Olympic athlete ever, as team USA won the 4x200 meter men’s freestyle relay in just under seven minutes. They were followed by France after several seconds with China in third.

Last week Phelps summed up his philosophy to reporters by saying, “Obviously, we always want to swim faster.”

Team USA included Conor Dwyer of Winnetka, Illinois, seen below on the left celebrating with his teammates, who swam second. This was his first Olympic medal.
