The Cook County Clerk on Monday will decide the fate of a couple of tied races from April’s Consolidated Election.

Illinois law states that when two or more candidates are tied the county clerk will “determine by lot” the elected winner. In this case, Cook County Clerk David Orr will flip a coin to determine the outcome.

Who gets to call heads or tails? A lot will be cast for that, as well.

The clerk will put the candidates names in a pill bottle, shake it around and draw out a name. The chosen candidate gets to make the call, and the coin will be flipped. The loser of the toss will still have a chance to file for a discovery recount.

Berwyn School District 98 candidates Fritz Paul-Emile and Joseph Festa are tied at 162 votes for the third vacancy on the board. There’s also a tie for a spot on the Broadview Village Trustee panel. Woodie Morris and Gerald Davis have 458 votes each.
