The presidential race in Peru is a dead heat. Peruvian writer and Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa has compared the election to deciding between “cancer and AIDS.”
The runoff pits Ollanta Humala, the ultranationalist who lost in 2006 to current president Alan Garcia, against Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of jailed former authoritarian leader Alberto Fujimori.
The only debate of the campaign was last weekend, and Keiko has emerged with a very slight lead.
