A primer on Chinese literature’s first Nobel winner
Last week, Mo Yanbecame the first Chinese citizen ever awarded the Nobel Prize in literature(Gao Xingjian won in 2000, but he was a French citizen). Mo Yan, a pen-name for Guan Moye meaning “don’t speak,” grew up during the Cultural Revolution, the setting for many of his works.
