A Chicago anti-eviction advocacy group says a property development company is once again trying to kick tenants out unfairly.

Last summer the Illinois office for the federal housing authority intervened in a case involving Northpoint Properties. Northpoint was trying to evict a family whose caretaker had died. The company claimed that an aunt who had stepped in to care for three children was not on the lease.

Now, members of a group called the Anti-Eviction Campaign accuse the company of trying to intimidate tenants who are forming a union.

TAYLOR: Several tenants who have placed work orders with Northpoint to deal with maintenance problems have had their rents refused.

That’s Keeanga Taylor, who joined a dozen protesters outside the Department of Housing and Urban Development office downtown today. The Northpoint complex is subsidized by HUD, and houses more than 300 people.

Calls to AIMCO, Northpoint’s parent company, were not immediately returned.
