Harper High:This weekend and next, This American Life will devote two full episodes to the violence affecting Harper High School in Chicago. Last school year, 29 current and recent Harper students were shot. Twenty-one were wounded; eight died. Black Star: Phillip Jackson is a child of Altgeld Gardens who went on to serve the city in a number of capacities, from head of the CHA to the Chief of Education. After later serving as President and CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago for one year, he elected in 2002 to devote himself fulltime to the organization he founded in 1996, The Black Star Project. The community group is dedicated to improving the lives of blacks and Latinos in Chicago. He’ll react to the president’s remarks—and the city’s handling of violence.
