A Chicago Alderman wants to replace the Independent Police Review Authority with an entirely new agency. South Side Alderman Leslie Hairston says she wants to see Chicagoans have more power over who watches the police.  So she’s teamed up with University of Chicago Law Professor Craig Futterman to come up with the new Independent Citizen Police Monitor.

The agency would be funded to at least 1.5 percent of whatever the police department gets from City Hall, and Futterman says it would have the independence and power to root out patterns of police abuse.  But Hairston said she hadn’t talked to any other aldermen or the mayor’s office yet to see if they would support it.
