Three Chicago aldermen are joining parents and community residents in a call to keep a Logan Square school open.

Alderman Scott Waguespeck (32nd), Alderman Robert Fioretti (2nd) and Alderman John Arena (45th) joined the group of concerned residents.

“Brentano is a wonderful school and we want it here to stay,” said Kate Kindleberger, a neighborhood resident. 

She and others delivered a petition to Chicago Public Schools on Wednesday. The petition called the school an anchor for the North Side community.

Brentano Math and Science Academy is among more than 100 schools on a list for possible closing by Chicago Public Schools because it is considered “underutilized.” 

Rose Becerra has had three daughters graduate from the school and her 7th grade son is currently a student. Becerra describes the school as a community center to her son and others who participate in after school activities there.

“I think that they should come in at look at how the school is being utilized instead of just throwing numbers,” Bercerra said.

Fioretti says schools across the city are threatened.

“Let’s make it really clear, this is a fight for neighborhood schools,” Fioretti said. “This is a fight for equality across the city. whether it’s a fight for Jones whether it’s a fight for the 1,000 plus schools that showed up last night for neighborhood schools, whether it’s a fight for Brentano,” he said.

Residents have turned out by the hundreds at CPS-sponsored hearings throughout the city on potential school closings.
