Cook County State’s Attorney-elect Anita Alvarez was at Daley Plaza today thanking voters and fielding questions from reporters.

Alvarez is the first-ever woman and first-ever Hispanic state’s attorney in Cook County.

ALVAREZ: As Cesar Chavez said, ‘Si se puede.’ You can, yes you can.

She says she wants to hire more Latino prosecutors.

Alvarez campaigned on attacking violent crime. Today she said one of her first targets will be straw gun purchasers.

ALVAREZ: Many states have what’s called a lost or stolen law which requires a reporting period if you discover your gun lost or stolen. We need to start holding accountable those people who are actually buying the guns and getting them into the hands of the gang members on the streets.

Alvarez is also talking about creating a separate mortgage fraud unit. And she wants 911 operators to go through special training for domestic violence calls.

Alvarez’s term begins December 1.
