The owners of a suburban apartment complex say police are violating the rights of their 2,000 residents by blockading the property. They filed a lawsuit today in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

For more than a week, Rolling Meadows Police have limited access to the 12 Oaks at Woodfield complex to only one entrance. Police Chief Steven Williams says officers are just handing out social service fliers. He says the limited access is in response to residents’ concerns about crime in the area.

WILLIAMS: We are not checking people’s identification. We are not asking people where they live or where they’re going.

But Attorney Blake Horwitz says owners received complaints about too much police questioning.

HORWITZ: There’s no legal justification for erecting cement blockades around a community for a police department to distribute fliers.

Police say they will continue the barriers until further notification.
