The “Bauhaus to Green Haus” lecture series brings to Chicago European architects/designers who draw on the Bauhaus tradition and address today’s sustainability challenges. In this installment, Matthais Böttger of Germany discussed his recent projects and design concepts.

Matthais Böttger founded raumtaktik (spatial tactics) in 2003 with architect Friedrich von Borries with a desire to pursue an investigation of space and spatial intervention. Raumtaktik is concerned with the cultural, economic, and political parameters that determine the shape of architecture and urban development. Böttger’s work with raumtaktik strives for a form of architecture that is “more than just a building.” His ideas concern the confrontation of ecological and social realities such as climate change, commercialization, resource shortages, and migration shifts.

“Bauhaus to Green Haus” is organized by the Goethe-Institut Chicago, the Austrian Consulate General in Chicago, the Consulate General of Italy in Chicago, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Consulate General of Switzerland, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Pro Helvetia, and Think Swiss.

Recorded Thursday, April 30, 2009 at The Art Institute of Chicago-Morton Auditorium.
