Beyond the Vote: A Community Discussion on Voice, Power, and Participation (West Side Bureau)

With the November elections right in front of us and all around us, consider joining your fellow Chicagoans to think and talk about how we participate — and what we hope for when we do. Voting is one way to get involved and be heard, but how does it stand next to other forms of involvement and action? How should we act to improve our city and our world, and what, however we express ourselves, are we hoping to get done?

Join Chicago Public Media, Mikva Challenge, and the Project on Civic Reflection for a participatory discussion about the power and the limits of participation in all its forms — October 25th at the WBEZ West Side Bureau, October 30th at the WBEZ South Side Bureau, and November 1st at the WBEZ North Side Bureau.

Online registration is now closed, but walk-ups are welcome for this October 25th West Side Bureau event.

Support for Chicago Public Media’s Community Bureaus is provided in part by Dr. Scholl Foundation, Met Life Foundation, and Crown Family Philanthropies.

The Project on Civic Reflection’s mission is to strengthen community and deepen understanding by helping people and organizations think and talk about the meaning of their work in the world.  Through the practice of reflective discussion, which utilizes provocative readings, images, and video, PCR helps people consider the beliefs and values that underlie their commitments—leading to clarity about their work, stronger relationships, and more committed, effective action.

A non-partisan organization, Mikva Challenge was founded in 1999 on the simple premise that youth voice and participation matter, and that our civic and political life will be stronger when youth participate and help shape their own destinies! By promoting positive youth development and providing access to the democratic process, Mikva aims to develop young people’s civic identities as change agents in their communities.
