Former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge reported to federal prison Wednesday. But there are still many outstanding legal issues surrounding his legacy.

There are at least six pending civil lawsuits related to Jon Burge and his time as a Chicago police commander. They’re related to alleged tortured in the 1970s and 80s at Area Two of the Chicago Police Department, which Burge was in charge of at the time.
The plaintiffs spent years in prison, but were exonerated later.

“This was a chapter - an important chapter - in the history of police torture scandal in the City of Chicago, but it’s not the last chapter,” said Flint Taylor, an attorney representing three alleged torture victims who are now suing the city.

Taylor said the city has spent millions of dollars on legal fees and settlements on civil cases related to the torture of police suspects in Area Two.

A spokeswoman with the City of Chicago’s Law Department did not return requests for comment.

Burge has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for lying about the torture of suspects. He’s starting the sentence today in North Carolina.
