The story of Carmen is an enduring classic in the operatic canon and has provided interpretive fodder for many great thinkers and artists. Listen in to a discussion of why this piece continues to fuel artistic innovation in film, music and theater. Acclaimed Spanish film director Carlos Saura explores his projection of Carmen onto the cinematic screen in his flamenco retelling of the story. He is joined by Chicago Opera Theater Director Andrew Eggert and Conductor Alexander Platt who delve into Peter Brook’s deconstruction of Carmen and the Chicago Opera Theater’s twenty-first century reiteration of this piece, La Tragédie de Carmen.

This event is presented in partnership with Instituto Cervantes Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Recorded Monday, April 20, 2009 at Museum of Contemporary Art.
