Trustees of the northwest suburb of Carpentersville tonight will consider adopting English as the village’s official language. Chicago Public Radio’s Chip Mitchell reports.

The measure’s supporters say it could eliminate translations ranging from the village newsletter to water bills.

About 40 percent of Carpentersville’s 37,000 residents speak Spanish.

Keith Hinz won a seat on the village’s seven-member board of trustees last month after campaigning for a crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

He said this afternoon that he’d support postponing a vote on the measure for two weeks to address recommendations from the village staff.

One of those would allow languages other than English during emergencies.

The nearby suburb of Hampshire last month became the first Illinois municipality to make English its official language.
