It’s nice to know the products you buy are free from exploitation — or at least I think so. It’s that feeling that keeps Chicago’s fair trade movement growing.

World Fair Trade Days happens each May in Daley Plaza and features several dozen of Chicago’s most prominent fair trade producers and retailers. There are clothing manufactures like Mata Traders and Marketplace: Handworks of India. There are food groups like Chicago Honey Co-op and Devine Chocolate. When you stand among their tents in Daley Plaza, with all the diverse people and products, you really feel that you can consume in a way you can be proud of.

Fair Trade Chicago’s efforts have resulted in Chicago’s recognition as a Fair Trade City, which means the city is part of a global movement working to bring people jobs and products with dignity. On Tuesday’s episode of Worldview, Nancy Jones of Fair Trade Chicago, and Holly Elzinga, founder of Our Fair Earth, talk about local venues that support the growth of Chicago’s fair trade community.

Fair Trade Chicago takes place Wednesday May 9 at Chicago’s Daley Plaza from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The noon program will feature Chief Sustainability Officer Karen Weigert with Jerome McDonnel as the emcee.
