By Produced by Eight Forty-EightRon Santo, the former Chicago Cubs third baseman and longtime team announcer, was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame Monday. But, the announcement was bittersweet: Santo died last year from complications related to bladder cancer.
His family, friends, fans and even Santo himself hoped he would live to get the call. However, the honor still meant the world to those who knew and loved him.
Eight Forty-Eight heard from Jeff Santo, Billy Williams, WBEZ’s Jason Marck and Paul Friedman, Cheryl Raye-Stout and Vicki Santo. And, longtime Chicago Tribune baseball columnist, Phil Rogers, joined Eight Forty-Eight by phone to talk about Santo’s election into the Hall of Fame.
Richard Steele recently interviewed Rogers about his book, Ernie Banks: Mr. Cub and the Summer of ’69.
