Chicago public housing residents are upset about a proposal that would demolish 1,800 apartments. They plan to come out in droves to a public meeting this evening.

The Chicago Housing Authority has deemed hundreds of units at three different sites across the city uninhabitable.

More than 600 units at Altgeld Gardens would be demolished. The sprawling development has been a challenge to redevelop because its location is in an isolated part of the city.

CHA has assessed that the Cabrini rowhouses should not be 100 percent public housing. Those apartments are within the mixed-income housing footprint at Cabrini.

Finally, Lathrop Homes on the North Side caused friction between residents and CHA. Residents want the housing to remain for low-income, working families.

People who live in public housing would rather see their buildings rehabbed than demolished.

D. Bradford Hunt is a professor at Roosevelt University who researches CHA. He said the CHA proposal is short on details.

“I think a fuller discussion of that, a presentation of the option…why not air this out? Why not make a strong case for whatever it is that you think is next?” Hunt said.

The CHA board plans to vote on the plan next month.
