Cheat Sheet: Is CPS Partly to Blame for Youth Violence?
It's time again for “Cheat Sheet,” your quick and dirty guide to the often contentious and always interesting Chicago Board of Education meetings. October's meeting had a more somber tone. This is how Board President Michael Scott started things off:
SCOTT: It's been a pretty tough month for Chicago Public Schools and all of our children, particularly Derrion Albert who met such a tragic death, but he was one of two or three children. But, just to kinda set the tone for public participation I think we should all stand and recognize him in a moment of silence.
Youth violence was the issue of the day. Parents from Fenger High School were there. And the question of whether Chicago Public Schools' policies are actually to blame for some of that violence was raised by parents, teachers and activists. WBEZ's education reporter Linda Lutton has more on what was discussed at the meeting.
