Kids in Chicago will now have to be indoors earlier in the evening. The city council on Thursday approved a measure fining kids between the ages of 12 and 16 who are found out after 10:00 p.m. without an adult during the week. Minors 12 and younger have to be inside before 8:30 p.m.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said earlier curfews will protect children from being victims of crimes.

“Having a policy that in my view actually backs up the parents is the right policy for the city of Chicago,” Emanuel said. “I had a curfew when I grew up which was: street light went on, you haul tail back home.”

Kids who are found breaking curfew could be fined up to $500. If a minor is found breaking curfew three times in a year, the fine could jump to as much as $1,500.
