The LA Times and Baltimore Sun report that Chicago is a great city for walkers. Citing a recent Yahoo survey, Chicago is the fifth most “walker friendly” city in the US, due in large part to the paths along Lake Michigan. Today the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation handed out its annual “genius” award in the form of a $500,000 grant. The recipients are chosen based on their talent and dedication to their respective fields. The Wall Street Journal profiles the 23 recipients, which includes a linguist, stone carver, and a marine biologist. Local winners include Shannon Lee Dawdy, an anthropologist at the University of Chicago and former Chicagoan director David Cromer. If Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s chief of staff, decides to run for mayor of Chicago he may be looking for new digs. The former resident owns a house on the North Side, but has rented it out through June of next year. Bloomberg and The Washington Post picked up news that Emanuel’s current tenant, Robert Halpin has no plans to move before then. If Emanuel does make a bid for mayor, this could complicate things, particularly if his residency is challenged.
