June ended with a burst of Chicago gun violence. Still, the 47 murders reported by the city’s Police Department during the month were the fewest in June since 2015.
This weekend’s violence included five homicides and 55 nonfatal shootings between Friday at 1:50 p.m. and Monday at 3:20 a.m., according to CPD reports.
Looking at the year to date, a WBEZ review of police data shows murders are down 8% compared to the first half of last year. Chicago has had 236 murders so far in 2019 compared to 257 in 2018.
A CPD statement on Monday morning said robberies and burglaries this year are also down.
