From the South Side to the West Side to the North Side, just about every local knows how distinctive Chicago’s neighborhoods are. Few of us, however, know exactly how they came to be. Historian Ann Durkin Keating sheds new light on twenty-first-century Chicago.

Ann Durkin Keating is Professor of History and Chairperson of History at North Central College, Naperville, IL.  She is co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Chicago (University of Chicago Press, 2004), and her new book, Chicago Neighborhoods and Suburbs: A Historical Guide (University of Chicago Press, 2008) is now on sale.

Recorded Thursday, December 04, 2008 at The Newberry Library.
