Chicago Officials To Hold Hearings On Police Reform

City officials will hold two sets of hearings on police reform in the coming weeks. Last Thursday night, eight aldermen from the progressive caucus held a lively, well-attended hearing on police reform and promised to hold five more.

The next day, Mayor Emanuel’s office announced a series of five meetings on the same topic 32nd Ward Alderman and progressive caucus chair Scott Waguespack says the announcement came as a surprise. He says he was more concerned by the mayor’s further statement that the Council would vote on a police-reform measure in September. He thinks that’s too fast for thoughtful, effective reforms. He says his group will go forward with its own hearings.

The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
