Michael Shannon has quite the reputation for tackling intense roles. The Academy Award nominee got his start in Chicago theater with the likes of Steppenwolf Theatre Company and A Red Orchid Theatre.

But you’ve probably got glimpses of him in films like “The Runaways,” “8 Mile,” and, way back in the day, “Groundhog Day.” Shannon received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in “Revolutionary Road.”

Currently he’s one of the stars of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” Shannon plays Federal Agent Nelson Van Alden, who’s trying to take down an Atlantic City kingpin. The series draws to a close Sunday, at least until Season 2.

Shannon joined “Eight Forty-Eight” from New York City to talk about his journey.
