A new boat harbor opened Thursday on Chicago’s South Side.

Chicago Park District officials said the new 31st Street Harbor was funded entirely by boater fees.

Scott Stevenson is executive vice-president with Westrec Marinas, the company that sells the boat spaces. He said boat dealers seeking additional venues created the harbor’s demand.

“We give the opportunity for the marine industry to grow here in Chicago and we give the opportunity for a thousand new Chicago boats to use our wonderful lakefront,” he said.

The 31st Street Harbor is Chicago’s tenth harbor.

The city will host a boat show at the harbor today through Sunday, June 10.
