Over the last three years, the Chicago International Movies & Music Festival has become an increasingly vital merger of sound and vision, and the few films announced so far for 2012 hold considerable promise.

Taking place at several venues in Wicker Park and Logan Square from April 12 to 15, the fourth annual four-day “celebration of outstanding films, intense concerts, incredible DJ/VJ events, daring live score performances and more” once again will showcase “what music and movies mean to each other and highlight the crossover of film and song shedding light on the interconnectedness of all people.”

Some ambitious goals there, but why not aim high? And this blogger for one is eager indeed to catch one of the featured music docs, Louder Than Love: The Grande Ballroom Story, directed by Tony D’Annunzio and chronicling the soulful but gritty and hard-rocking sounds regularly churned out at Detroit’s legendary Grande Ballroom in the late ’60s by the likes of the MC5, the Stooges and Ted Nugent.

The full programming announcement is yet to come, but also on the 2012 bill are Mark Ford’s Uprising: Hip Hop and the LA Riots, about the connections between West Coast gangsta rap and the Los Angeles Riots of 1992, and Jesse Vile’s Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet, about a guitar prodigy whose love for music arguably has kept him alive against all odds during a 22-year battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

A limited number of festival passes are on sale now for $50 via www.cimmfest.eventbrite.com; these all-access tickets open the door to more than 50 movies and special events and come with a CIMMFest 2012 T-shirt, silk-screen poster and a gift bag with goodies from Bloodshot Records and elsewhere.
