The city of Chicago will roll out with the next phase of its plan to restructure the garbage-collection grids, changing pickup days for many on the North Side and the Loop.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation announced on Wednesday the third rollout of the collection plan that is slated to take effect Sept. 17 of this year. 

“The grid garbage system demonstrates that we can provide great service while making smarter use of our resources,“Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement.

The latest roll out will take place in wards 1, 26, 27, 32, 35, 42, 43 and 44 as well as small portions of wards 2, 33, and 47. Neighborhoods that will be affected are: the Loop, Streeterville, Wicker Park, Lake View, Lake View East, Lincoln Park and parts of Avondale and Logan Square.

The city says that by using more efficient routes, the Department of Streets and Sanitation can use fewer crews to provide the same services, while saving millions in operation costs. The city also said that the plan could reduce expenses associated with fuel, vehicle purchases and maintenance.

Previously, garbage was collected by ward, which gave control to the aldermen. After Emanuel took office, he swore to redo the grid, which he says will save the city an estimated $20 million.

The city plans to change the grid in seven phases, the first of which began on June 11, affecting wards 30, 33, 35, 38, 39, 41 and 45.  The second phase, instituted July 30, redid the grids in the 33, 38, 39, 41 and 45 wards.

The city also said residents that receive blue cart recycling services may see a change in pickup day, but that the week of service should remain the same.
