Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is trying to prevent the sale of the Burr Oak Cemetery. The Chicago-area cemetery was the site of a burial scandal discovered last summer.

Dart says he was stunned to learn the new owners wanted to conduct burials in an area he previously designated as “Crime Scene 1.” He says there are still bones in the area that can’t be identified. The sheriff says there’s evidence the cemetery is at its burial capacity.

DART: Could they bury one, two, three in plots that had been purchased years ago and that are in between another level? I’m sure those ones are probably available there. But that is a small amount. To be talking about thousands of burials, specifically in the area where we found thousands of bones, is insane, absolutely insane.

Dart says he’s reached out to the state’s attorney’s office to explore all legal options to stop the sale of Burr Oak. The sale to Cemecare LLC was approved in bankruptcy court earlier this week.
