Creating a culture of literacy

For Front and Center, Wisconsin Public Radio’s Veronica Rueckert will host a one-hour show exploring the culture of literacy in the Great Lakes region on June 12th at 10 a.m. CST. We’ll discuss the ways in which parents affect vocabulary, whether we’re a culture of readers or non-readers and learn how music can help facilitate the reading process.

Part One: Children's book author and San Diego State University professor Jerry Griswold and Wisconsin Poet Laureate Bruce Dethlefsen discuss the how to create a culture of readers.

Part Two: Cartoonist Josh Elder of Reading with Pictures says using comic books in the classroom gets kids more excited about reading than dusty old classic literature.

Part Three: Neurobiology professor Nina Kraus of Northwestern University talks about how music impacts our brains as we learn to read and write.
