Alfredo Sfeir-Younis is a Chilean economist and President of the Zambuling Institute for Human Transformation. He also had a long career as an officer of World Bank for almost 30 years. Alfredo’s life has provided him many unusual twists and turns. Among other issues at the World Bank, he worked for the rights of indigenous peoples, and in the areas of peace and social justice; poverty eradication, gender issues, international trade and spirituality in sustainable development. Along the way, his spiritual journey led him to become a Mayan Priest.

We spoke with Alfredo a few weeks ago about the spiritual aspects of entrepreneurship and capitalism. We found his answers so interesting that we also asked him about our global food system. One of the hallmarks of globalization is the large amount of food we move around the planet. We subsidize food in so many different ways, we asked Alfredo what he thought of how we’ve structured our world food system.
