Criminal charges are expected today against a Gary, Indiana firefighter accused of operating a dog fighting ring.

Carlton Davis, Jr. is expected to face multiple charges of animal neglect and operating animal fight contests. A source close to the investigation says Davis faces up to nine felony charges and several misdemeanor charges.

Police and animal rescue officials late last month raided a home Davis owns near Gary. Sixteen pit bulls were found, some suffering from bite wounds and malnutrition. All are believed to have been part of a dog-fighting ring. Police confiscated heavy steel chains, thick leather collars and a sort of canine treadmill believed to be used to keep the dogs in fighting shape.

The dogs are now being housed and cared for at the Lake County, Indiana sheriff’s animal control center. None have been put down, and some could be put up for adoption once they fully recover.

Lake County, Indiana prosecutor Bernard Carter and Sheriff Roy Dominguez are expected to announce the charges in Crown Point.
