Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he doesn’t like a Federal Aviation Administration plan to close runways at Midway Airport.

The FAA last week proposed pilots should increase their landing distances by 15 percent when conditions are poor. If an airport doesn’t have the extra runway space, planes will be diverted.

The proposal comes after an airplane skidded off a Midway landing strip last December. Mayor Daley says one accident is no reason for taking drastic action.

“You can’t blame, because all the planes land there every day. We have over 300 landings per day. Good, bad weather. They’re landing there,” he says.

Daley says the Midway incident was caused by “human error.“
