Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and First Lady Maggie Daley were on the South Side today. It was the last stop on the mayor’s neighborhood appreciation tour.

Chicago residents applauded Mayor Daley and his wife as they entered a field house on the city’s South Side. Daley says his more than 20 years as mayor were all about serving the people of the city.

“Whether you voted for me, whether you didn’t vote for me, you couldn’t vote. It doesn’t matter. You serve the people. It doesn’t matter what political philosophy. It doesn’t matter. You serve the people,” Daley said.

Daley also praised After School Matters, a program headed by First Lady Maggie Daley.

“You know, I could’ve never done it unless I was married to this guy. So it certainly helped. There’s no doubt about that,” she said.

Maggie Daley, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2002, joined her husband today in his last stop of his neighborhood appreciation tour. She was recently released from the hospital after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Mayor Daley officially retires Monday when Rahm Emanuel is sworn into office.
