Flag-waving Chicagoans lined a roped-off aisle at City Hall on Friday, eyes fixed on an elevator door. The longest serving mayor of Chicago emerged to an eruption of cheers, and waved as he made his way towards the street. His wife Maggie was at his side.

People say they came out for the final walk for all number of reasons. One man had “nothing better to do” and just happened to be there. Maryam Ahmad said she came because, “Mayor Daley is the only mayor I’ve known and I love Chicago and I want to be here to say goodbye because of all he’s done for our fabulous city.”

And as for what Chicagoans said they’ll miss about Daley… some cited his work beautifying the city and making Chicago a more international metropolis. And Delores Thompson said, “I think I’m gonna miss how warm he was to everyone. He was just an all around great guy.”

Rahm Emanual is scheduled to be sworn in at a ceremony in Millenium Park on Monday.
