Institute of Women Today
Friday, May 30 || 10am - 2pm

The Institute of Women Today (IWT) mission is to provide transitional housing for homeless women, children, and families; and to provide experiences that empower, mentor, and support persons experiencing homelessness and the broader community so they can achieve their highest potential. Volunteers will support IWT’s mission by organizing and inventorying donated items for more efficient distribution and use.

Hayt Elementary
Saturday, May 31 || 10am - 1pm

Hayt Elementary fosters an appreciation and has respect for their rich cultural diversity, as well as a life-long love of learning. Volunteers at Hayt will help to carry out an outdoor beautification project that was proposed by Hayt School students for various areas of the school’s exterior.

Prosser Career Academy is a public vocation high school that is dedicated to excellence and want present and future students to benefit from the tradition of excelling by understanding and appreciating the need to respect the rights of others and to understand the purpose of education. Volunteers will be participating in their very first build day of a new teaching/learning garden for the school and surrounding community!

Cornerstone Community Outreach

Cornerstone Community Outreach offers shelter and services to homeless and low-income families and individuals through a variety of programs.  Volunteers will support they shelter by organizing the donated bags of clothing to allow for efficient distribution.

South Shore Fine Arts Academy – Dorchester Community Garden

South Shore Fine Arts Academy is a school with high expectations of performance for every single member of the school community, including teachers, parents, administration, support staff, and of course students and a school dedicated to building community relationships. Volunteers will support South Shore Fine Arts and Rebuild Foundation, a partner of the Academy, by working towards the development of a community garden next to the school.

Hartwell  - Chicagoland Methodist Senior Services

The Hartwell – Chicagoland Methodist Senior Services is an accredited and faith-based nonprofit that supports, improves, and enhances the quality of life for older adults by empowering them to live with dignity and respect. Volunteers will help enhance the quality of life for residents at the Hartwell by working with residents to plant flowers (in the ground and in planters), pull weeds, and trim back bushes.

The Gardeneers – Rowe Elementary

The Gardeneers mission is to increase health and nutrition of Chicago children by creating and maintaining community gardens in Chicago schools. WBEZ is partnering with three of the gardens supported by the Gardneers:  Hay Elementary, Oglesby Elementary, and Rowe Elementary. WBEZ volunteers will dig out already existing garden beds, move compost/ soil into the beds, plant seedlings into the beds, fertilize and water seedlings, and pick up trash around surrounding school yard.

I Grow Chicago
Saturday, May 31 || 9:30am - 1:30pm

I Grow Chicago is a non-profit, 501-c-3 corporation and their service area includes Englewood, South Shore, South Chicago, Roseland, parts of Auburn-Gresham, and parts of Woodlawn. After eight years of working in the community, they have created a plan for I Grow Chicago’s Urban Farm, Green Community Healing / Educational Center and Sanctuary. Volunteers will help to support the new Green Community Healing/Educational Center and Sanctuary by hosting a neighborhood meal event that will engage community members.

North Uptown Neighbors Association (Block Club)
Saturday, May 31 || 9am - 11am

The North Uptown Neighbors Association is one of Chicago’s many block clubs and they’re committed to greening the neighborhood. The block club is home to several hundred households, a community college, a Buddhist Temple, a social service center, and a dozen of businesses. At the Uptown Post Office, WBEZ volunteers will help mulch and plant a small selection of annual plants in key spots.
